We’re excited to welcome Kevin to the GeoMarvel team. Kevin joined the GeoMarvel office in Arlington, Virginia in June of 2019. To highlight our newest member of the team, here’s our quick Q & A session with Kevin Cheriyan to help you get to know him a little better.
What is your role at GeoMarvel, and what does it involve?
Describe your education and professional backgrounds
I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Geography, with a concentration in GIS and Cartography, from the University of Maryland College Park in 2015. I’m currently working towards completing the GIS Masters Program at Maryland as a part-time student, with an expected graduation date in the Spring of 2020. My previous work includes my position as a Cartographer for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. And between 2016 and June of 2019, I worked as a GIS Analyst for Natural Systems Analysts Inc.
What drew you to join the GeoMarvel team?
GeoMarvel drew me in because I was interested in working on a team where I could put my existing GIS and spatial skills to good use, while honing those skills and integrating them with effective GIS application development.
What is your favorite part about working for GeoMarvel?
I love having access to so many opportunities to learn about GIS and software development from folks who are passionate about the industry and their clients.
Before working for GeoMarvel, what was the most unique/interesting job you’ve had?
As an undergraduate at Maryland, I worked as a Research Assistant on the ISS-CREAM experiment, helping assemble a cosmic ray detector that was installed on the International Space Station.
How do you like to spend your time outside of the office?
I spend my free time running and playing board games. A few favorites are Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar, Castles of Burgundy, and Splendor.
What advice do you have for upcoming professionals in your field?
Ask questions early and never stop learning!
What random facts can you share about yourself?
I can make a mean Liquid Nitrogen ice cream. Bring your own sprinkles.
Where are you from originally?
I was born in Kerala, India. I moved to Brooklyn, NY when I was 12 and then moved on to Maryland after high school, where I currently live.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
If I could travel anywhere, I’d visit McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
Favorite sport, movie, quote?
My favorite sport is tennis. Favorite movie is The Tree of Life.
